Ethan Allen is nice but pricey. There is one in Annapolis. Danker is also nice but pricey, but their furniture lasts. Haverty’s — rather pricey. And buy an insurance protection plan for their store brands. I’ve had to use mine twice for a TV armoire. Marlo — their stuff is indeed cheap. Value City same thing, but I did buy an ottoman from there that has held up for several years. Room Store — they had to replace my kitchen table, so the workmanship and quality is questionable. There’s a Belfort furniture store, but it’s in VA. I hear Thomasville is nice. Not sure where the nearest one is, however. I have a living room sofa from Jennifer’s that is still hanging in there. There is a Jennifer’s in Annapolis. I like the idea of used furniture, but not exactly the upholstered stuff (unless I’m going to have it reupholstered).

Hold on.The front room, the living room is dominated by a 1926 Chickering and Sons baby grand piano. It is set upon a Persian carpet woven in deep reds, dark blue and white. The Chickering company was a major musical presence in Boston from 1823 until its demise in 1983.The couple’s wedding album and a framed photo rest atop the piano on a richly-patterned brocade cloth. The room is painted a deep cream to coordinate with the pair of plush, suede-finished love seats. Here, and throughout the home, the woodwork trim is painted white.”We use Benjamin Moore paints all through the house,” Rob said. “We initially had a lot of bright colors in the house, but as we brought in more Mission-Bungalow looks, we tamed the colors down.”The upper dining room walls are still vivid – painted in broad matte and shiny claret stripes. The lower walls are accented with white woodwork. The rear wall is a bank of windows that look out onto a cozy, year-round enclosed sunroom and to the outdoor view beyond. The handsome furniture was purchased from the former Danker Furniture store in Arnold.A side archway leads into the kitchen, but we’ll retrace our steps through the two rooms. We stroll down the hallway to the kitchen. Halfway there, we pass through the juncture with another hallway. This one leads to the right, passing a powder room, into the family room. The walls feature the tall white beadboard. High above our heads are intriguing light shades. They are hand-woven South African grain baskets that Rob bought on impulse during one of his trips. “The shipping cost more than the baskets,” he mock-grumbled. “I didn’t know what to do with them, so I strung them up as light fixtures.” Good idea.At the entrance to the kitchen is a pyramid display of the couple’s Faulk Copper Cookware, gleaming, heavy copper pots and pans handmade in Wespelaar, Belgium, a short drive from Brussels. “I purchased them one piece at a time,” Rob said. The stove is unique: it has a deep fat fryer right next to the stove top. The fryer can hold a whole chicken or several cups of french fries.”It gets a lot of use at parties,” Rob said. He explained the kitchen re-do was instigated, in part, because they enjoy entertaining. Often, half the neighborhood is seated around the kitchen, sunroom and family room, eating the latest dish Rob has created.”The old kitchen was too small,” he said. The countertops are a Norwegian granite called Blue Pearl. The stone shimmers with a silvery iridescence that is echoed in the brushed nickel and stainless steel appliances. Sunken into the large island countertop is a sink in use as a champagne and wine chiller. On our visit, it is filled with ice and chilled bottles of champagne and white wine. The long, deep, narrow sink with undulating edges is sunk into the middle of the counter, near where seven high bar stools upholstered in red Ultrasuede are placed. Rob found the unusually-shaped sink overseas and brought it home. He gave the stonecutter the measurements and the sink fit perfectly. The sink is highlighted by the overhead glow of red pendant lamps from Annapolis Lighting, suspended from two curlicue ceiling tracks installed on the beadboard ceiling. In renovating the rear of the house, Jeff and Rob sketched out their ideas, which were translated into blueprints by the architectural firm Crows Feet Design. Lauer Construction Company took it from there.Rob’s brother, Troy Beall, a skilled wood artisan, built the countertop that fits under the kitchen’s rear windows. He owns Annapolis Woodworks in Davidsonville. The counter, which is used as a combination desk and, during parties, as a buffet table, is crafted from Brazilian Bubinga wood. “It’s one piece. No holes,” said Jeff. “I’m taking it with us if we ever move.”In the family room, Chalk Point Masonry build the stacked stone fireplace flue and, a new company, Greg Lauer Custom Builders LLC, built the wooden mantle. It took three attempts before Rob was satisfied with the dimensions of the hefty, Craftsman-style piece.

We just went to Overstock Furniture last night where we bought a sofa and a love seat. When we first walked in, it was very quiet. While we looked around, and tested out some sofa's by doing the bounce test, we began wondering “where the Sales people were”. Finally, by the time we reached the end of the store, we were greeted by a man who was sitting down at the desk the entire time. We were informed that there was the top level of the store, and then there was the ShowRoom downstairs. We ventured downstairs and it was pretty cool because it was just a huge area filled with all different kinds of furniture. We were like kids in a Candy Storm; we ran and bounced around from sofa to sofa trying each one out. We were able to look around without the sales team hasseling us, which was nice. I don't like people breathing down my neck while i'm trying to look at things. They did stop by here and there just in case we had questions or needed information. There's an older gentlman on the Sales Team named Ray, he was the best! Ray was nice, honest with his answer's when asked a question about the furniture, and was considerate. If you go to Overstock Furniture, ask for Ray! The furniture is really nice, and very decorative. They have sofa's, beds, tables, recliners, dressers, pretty much any furniture you can think of in all different colors, shapes, and sizes. They have a closing sale going on right now where everything is up to 80% off. Our Sofa and Love seat was 70% off and then we got a 20% off on top of it. Although, the 20% off on top changes from time to time. The day before we went, it was 10% off on top. Ray informed us that they don't know how long the extra percent off will last, it depends on what Corporate says for that day. The building looks kind of sketchy from the outside, but it's well worth it when you head inside. We love our furniture, and you can't beat the price.
