Air New Zealand commissioned Jasmax to design a new airline lounge for their presence within Christchurch Airport. As a domestic premium lounge, 70% of patrons are business travellers and the average time spent in the lounge is as little as 15-20 minutes. With this in mind, the design team were challenged to create an environment that was logical and intuitive to navigate, particularly during peak times. The resultant design delivers various spaces that give travellers a choice as to how they spend their time in the Lounge. For those requiring time to focus, the lounge was arranged with noisier, activated spaces around the entry and food service areas creating an atmosphere akin to a café, becoming increasingly quiet and contemplative towards the edges. Aligning the design to the values of Air New Zealand, inspiration for the interiors was drawn from the 180o view the lounge affords across the runway to the Southern Alps mountain range; capturing elements of native materials and integrating sustainability. The ceiling references the snow-capped peaks while the locally sourced timber wall panelling comes directly from the beech forests that cover its lower slopes. Jasmax worked closely with New Zealand furniture designer Simon James to develop the various seating options. Depending on preference, passengers can select any style from high tables with bar stools to low armchairs. Several elements were custom designed including the “lounger-leaner” in the front of the space accommodating two seating styles in one. Services such as air conditioning, lighting and fire protection were all carefully arranged, disguised, or hidden completely, to achieve as little distraction as possible. Timber wall panelling twists open to act as ventilation grilles and in-ceiling services are confined to narrow channels leaving the jagged effect of the ceiling undisturbed.

Contrasting glossy surfaces with textural elements adds plenty of visual interest. “The mixing of materials is something we are going to be seeing a lot more of,” says Wellington designer Libby Beattie. And remember, it is perfectly acceptable to incorporate antique or vintage items alongside modern – in fact it is to be encouraged. “Mixing a retro chair with a deep, buttoned sofa is typical of this mis-match of furniture styles,” says Beattie. Furnishings that have a story to tell are especially worthy. 3. KEEP IT LIGHT Scandinavian design, which has influenced interior styling from the Mid-century to the present, is continuing to prove its popularity.
